RESPONSE
(or Responding to the risks from climate change) was a
three-year project launched in December 2006 with the aim of
providing a framework for understanding and preparing for the
impacts of climate change in Europe.
The project's multi-national partnership was
led by the Isle of Wight Council's Centre for the Coastal
Environment and comprised 10 local
authorities and national institutions in the UK, France, Italy
and Poland. The partnership was supported by the European Union's
LIFE-Environment Programme (DG Environment) for sustainable
development.
The project has demonstrated regional-scale mapping
of coastal evolution and risks, taking account of the impacts of
climate change. It has also identified the current and future costs
of managing coastal natural hazards, to encourage cost-effective
solutions.
The project produced three key resources:
(1) A training pack detailing the process of
producing maps showing future coastal evolution and risk
increase for decision markets;
(2) A non-technical guide to assist end-users
with best practice to reduce risks in developed coastal areas in
a sustainable way;
(3) A video summarising project methods, results
and display posters.
