West Beach, Littlehampton 1998. River training jetties constructed at the mouth of the River Arun have intercepted dominant eastward drift causing accretion of a gravel upper and sandy lower beach and a linear dune complex since the early 19th century. An offset of 150m has now developed between the West Beach and the depleted and defended shore to the east of the inlet. Since 1993, gravel has been recycled from a zone extending 300m to the west of the west pier and is used to replenish the updrift Climping frontage.
