Preface
Authorship
This Sediment Transport Study has been prepared by RACER (River and Coastal Environments Research) in the Department of Geography at the University of Portsmouth. This edition builds on the first which was mainly compiled by David Carter and written by Dr Malcolm Bray. For this edition, the collation of all post-1990 research papers, reports etc. was completed by David Carter, who also substantially revised much of the original text. Mr Carter also wrote the new sections covering the Devon and East Sussex coasts and the review of the Quaternary History of the Solent. Malcolm Bray has reviewed all the sections and written specific contributions within each. Photographs were selected and edited by Malcolm Bray who also wrote the captions. Some editing has been undertaken by Janet Hooke. The maps were designed by Malcolm Bray and drawn by Bill Johnson and Rosemary Shearer. The interactive CD-ROM and Web site version was designed by Malcolm Bray and Maxine Wesley (University of Portsmouth, Learning Media Development) and was compiled by Maxine Wesley.Disclaimer
The information has been compiled and synthesised by the authors and represents their view of the present state of knowledge. The Report is presented by the University of Portsmouth to the commissioning Coastal Groups and does not necessarily represent the views or interpretations of those Coastal Groups.Acknowledgments
Word processing and layout of the text has been carried out by Margaret Fairhead, Sharon Jakobek, Carol Derrick and Brigid Winney in the Department of Geography Secretariat. Their collective skill and patience, at times under considerable pressure, is very gratefully acknowledged.A special debt is owed to Bill Johnson, of the Cartographic Services division of the University Faculty of the Environment Open Learning Resources Centre. He has drawn all of the accompanying maps, and advised on cartographic presentation.
The technical design of the web site and formatting of interactive text and maps has been undertaken by Maxine Wesley and Rosemary Shearer of the Department for Learning Development. A very special thanks is expressed to them for their design and implementation of the web site and for their cooperation over an extended time period.
Advice and guidance on the style and content of this report has been provided by Dr Andrew Bradbury (New Forest District Council) and Mr Neal Turner (Bournemouth Borough Council), representing SCOPAC; Mr David Green (Arun District Council) on behalf of the South Downs Coastal Group; and Mr Mike Amphlett (West Dorset District Council) for the membership of the Lyme Bay and South Devon Coastline Group.
Finally, thanks are due to officers representing their authorities on SCOPAC, South Downs Coastal Group and Lyme Bay and South Devon Coastline Group. They have provided access to essential documentation and contributed helpful discussion on numerous aspects of the coastal process regime and shoreline management of their respective areas. Their support, interest and hospitality is greatly appreciated.
