St Aldhelm's Head 2001. A hard Portland Limestone cap rock overlies Kimmeridge Clay resulting in deep-seated rotational landsliding together with a series of smaller scale topples and rockfalls from the limestone free face. Fallen Portland Stone blocks break up into boulders that form aprons on the foreshore as marine erosion removes fine material at the toe of the slope. The headland extends some 2km southward from the line of the coastline to the west and forms a boundary to the transport of littoral transport within the region.
