Axe Estuary, 2001. The estuary occupies a partially infilled and reclaimed valley and is confined by the embankments of the Seaton and District Electric Tramway (to left) and B3172 (to right) Valuable mudflat and saltmarsh habitats have formed within the estuary, although the protected embankments could contribute to "squeezing" of these fronting intertidal habitats as sea level rises.
