Portsmouth Harbour, 2000. The margins of the narrow entrance of the inlet and outer harbour are occupied by the urban and port developments of Portsmouth (near bank) and Gosport (far bank). The inlet channel is flushed by rapid ebb tidal currents and at this point naturally maintains a deep navigable harbour entrance. Mudflats flank the tributary creeks and occur widely within the mid and upper harbour (to right). Much of the harbour margins are reclaimed from mudflats and saltmarsh.
