Saltmarsh and mudflats at Elson, Portsmouth Harbour, 2003. Spartina anglica saltmarsh spread rapidly throughout the harbour during the early 20th century, but then has suffered major dieback so that mudflats flanking tidal channels have enlarged as the Spartina was lost.
