Failure of defences, southern Chidham peninsular, 2002. Fetches and wave exposure have increased in recent decades following widespread dieback of Spartina within the harbour. Many older defences are at risk of structural damage and undermining as foreshores lower, for they were not designed to withstand frequent direct wave action.
