View south over Blackgang, late 1990s. During the 19th century the upper undercliff was relatively stable and was occupied by several villas and a continuous road connecting Blackgang with St Lawrence. Instability has now increased cutting the road and resulting in loss of several properties. No economic ground stabilisation measures can be undertaken at this location, therefore the management policy is one of monitoring (automated warning system) and avoidance of risk. The owners of the Blackgang Chine theme park (foreground) have been progressively retreating upslope as instability encroaches. (IoW Centre for the Coastal Environment)
