Culver Down, 1999. The Chalk headland defines the northern margin of Sandown Bay and acts as a sub-cell boundary. Its cliffs fail by intermittent large-scale rockfalls creating temporary cliff toe debris fans. A Chalk shore platform has formed indicating long term retreat of these cliffs. The gravel (upper) and sand (lower foreshore) beach terminates against the Chalk, which forms a local drift sub-cell boundary. Note the turbid waters as fine eroded Chalk is removed seaward in suspension.
