Coast defences New Swanage, 2001. The toes of soft Wealden series cliffs are protected by a seawall, but instability continues to affect the cliffs above. A fall of reddish clay has extended across the esplanade and onto the beach. Note the narrow depleted beach that frequently fails to protect the seawall against wave attack at high tide. The groynes appear ineffective at intercepting drift.
