Understanding Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management

Click here for an explanation of the background to Strategy Studies and their role in flood and coastal erosion risk management (you may need to enable your browser for pop-ups)

What is a Strategy Study?

Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategies are produced by the Environment Agency and maritime Local Authorities, and were previously termed Coastal Defence Strategies.

They cover a shorter length of coast than the Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) and aim to identify appropriate schemes that implement SMP policies.

The economic and environmental assessments and research are carried out to a greater level of detail to identify preferred approaches for implementing or reviewing the SMP policies.

The map below shows the Strategy Study areas for the South East of England.
