| SUSTAINABLE USE OF TYRES IN COASTAL
ENGINEERING
2004-2005
HR Wallingford
The research produced guidance manual to inform civil engineers about the appropriate use of tyres and tyre bales in river and coastal engineering. The manual gives engineering reasons as to why tyres might be used compared to other materials, along with economic, social and environmental benefits of doing so. Case examples are provided of the use of whole tyres, tyre bales and tyre treads in port, coastal and river engineering applications. The durability, monitoring and maintenance of structures utilising tyres is also discussed and an environmental impact and risk assessment provided.
