Late stage in Spartina dieback, northeast Langstone Harbour, 2003. Fragmentation and near total loss of a once near continuous Spartina anglica lower marsh has occurred. Note that mudflats have replaced the saltmarsh forming a surface some 0.5 to 1.0m lower than the former marsh allowing increased wave action at the shoreline.
