Great Deep, lagoon and reedbeds, west Thorney peninsula, 2002. Embankments were constructed originally in 1870 to enclose and reclaim an area of saltmarsh and tidal channel (now the lagoon) that formerly separated Thorney Island from the mainland. The low-lying reclaimed land now forms a freshwater marsh that is a valuable habitat in itself, but depends upon maintenance of flood embankments to prevent tidal inundation.
