Gravel release from the backscar at Black Ven 1984.Gravel-rich blocks of Chert Beds and superficial deposits are detached from the backscar by rotational sliding and transported through the landslide complex to be deposited on the foreshore where they contribute to local beaches and drift eastwards. Operation of this process throughout the late-Holocene is believed to have delivered large quantities of material to Chesil Beach.
