Bournemouth Beach and Alum Chine, 2001. Sand distribution within groyne bays indicates net eastward drift (to the right). Beaches are relatively narrow due to gradual losses of sediment since the last replenishment in 1988/89 and researchers have estimated that further replenishment is likely to be required in 2004. Cliff protection by a continuous esplanade prevents erosion from naturally supplying the beaches. Note that the cliffs have been regraded to improve stability.
