Solent Beach and view towards Double Dykes and Hengistbury Head, 1994. The beach was replenished in 1988/89 and controlled by rock groynes with backshore protection provided by gabions (mid-distance). Windborne sand has promoted some dune formation, but active erosion and cliffing also occurs (mid-distance). A concern is that erosion may cut into the low-lying hinterland to the left such that a breach and permanent tidal channel could form with Chichester Harbour, some 300m distant.
